Hi all , when building a guitar is it necassary to sand the body in a hollow bowl jig to taper the sides, does it depend on body style or is it technique |

A sanding dish is probably the most popular method, but the goal is to shape the rims to match the dome of the top and back so that when they are glued in place, there's little to no stress on the components caused by forcing the plates to conform to the rims (or vice versa). Chuck |

No it is not required. STEWMAC'S kit instructions have a method that uses 2 degree and 5 degree tapers into the linings. I is not absoluty required to have the linings samed into an angle or spherical shape. Depending on how you inlet or not, your braces into the rim, the plates can conform and glue properly down to flat linings despite arched braces. Foggy Bottom guitas does just that on their tops. |

thanks for the responses and the welcome. Yesterdays post was a bit rushed I was grilling some steaks, anyways I'm building a kit from LMI its an om style. After viewing the instructional video I was a bit skeptical about being able to assemble a quality instrument. The guy in the video has everything he needs and my shops a bit sparse. So I gather from the responses that I can trim the sides down and put a small angle on the linings and this would suffice or I can get a sanding bowl.If I knew for sure I would build more then one guitar I might buy the bowl....... |
