Post subject:  Forum Etiquette Question

If I get this up fast enough you will see in my post below that I just thanks folks for their input on a question I had on mahogany tops. I never really know if I should post this kind of message. On the one hand, I want to thank people, on the other hand, I feel that by doing so I bump my post back up to the top and I'm not sure that people really want to open another post just to see my thanks. What's the right thing to do?

Pat

Good question Pat… I don’t have an answer, but I’ll seize this opportunity so say “THANKS” to everyone who is a part of this community. The wealth of knowledge here is priceless.

Pat, saying thank you is being polite and positive and I don't see any harm what so ever in posting a thank you for the replies, especially if they help.

If you were in a group brain storming session at work and the group came up with some good information for you wouldn't you say thank you at some point after the session. Even if you were to interrupt your colleagues at a different time to say thank you I'm sure they would appreciate it.

Either that or just send an e-card. Those things say it all laughing6-hehe

I feel exactly the same as you on this Pat....it feels wrong bumping a thread just to say thanks.

On another forum I'm on (Yamaha FZ-6) they have a separate icon in each posting that allows you to click to add your thanks to that persons post without bumping the thread. Perhaps we could do something similar on OLF?

I think the right thing to do is thank them. If someone can't spare 10 seconds to read a 'thank you post' they probably shouldn't be browsing the forum anyway; and surely they get some satisfaction from helping others or they wouldn't have answered your question in the first place so it follows they would appreciate knowing you got and are thankful for the info.

Say thank you. I do. I do admit that I sometimes wait a while after I recieve the first couple of replies before saying thanks, simply to allow others to post more comments so I don't end up saying thanks 4 or 5 times. But in the end it would be rude not to thank folks for taking time out of their day to answer a question or reply to a thread.

I know what you mean Pat. It hasn't happened to me often, but on one of my posts, showing an instrument I made, quite a lot of people made kind comments and I felt obliged to say thank you. I let a few comments pass each time but the last time, the post had worked its way a long way down the list before I noticed 2 or 3 more comments. At that point it did seem to be blowing my own trumpet a bit, bumping the post up to the top again just to say thanks.

:D Well Lance and Brock only gave me one bullet and they make me keep it in my shirt pocket but I'll take a shot at this question. :D

Pat my friend and everyone else for that matter I think that you should do exactly what you feel like you need to do. If that is thank people go ahead and do so.

One of the hallmarks of the OLF since it's inception has been that people are good to each other here. Thanking folks is just another reason why this place works IMHO.

Thanks for asking! [:Y:] :D

Also Pat, being Canadian, we really can't help ourselves. Being polite is part of our heritage.

Pat, you're a standup guy to even ask the question...plus, each "thank you" post gets you one post closer to the 300,000 $$$! :D

Hey Pat, i'm new to the OL Forum but i've gotten a lot of great advice and help from the OLF members and i'm very greatful for all of it. as time goes on i'm certain i'll be asking more questions and giving back thank you's. personally, i think it is respectful to acknowledge those who help and i'm not just saying that because i'm a "newbee". this is a great forum. i hope to post some of my work later on as it is the reason why i came to the forum.

thanks everyone!

Floyd
