Looking for something using the block method for a somewhat Spanish Style or something like Alan Carruth's basket weave. http://www.alcarruthluthier.com/guitars ... Repair.htm |

Chris, Guitar Making Tradition and Technology, Chapter 6 pages 118-123 gives a very good tutorial on the Spanish style rosette. Ken Franklin's tutorial here on the OLF is more required reading and is the method that I use most. Mr. Carruth posted a how to on the MIMF when he first showed off the basket weave. The methods are essentialy the same in that you create a "log" that you slice tiles from. Caution: making rosettes this way is almost as addictive as building guitars! Designing and assembling one of these can double the amount of time it takes to build the box. Steve |

Steve, I have that book and there is also a artical by Eugene Clark in American Lutherie #71 and #73 (excellent). I'll have to check out Ken's tutorial. I haven't seen Alan's artical at MIMF. I did see where he said it wasn't very hard as much as fussy and it was a block method and that he might do a picture tutorial as it would be easier then trying to explain it. But if he posted one then I must have missed it. I'm still looking for any other sources that might be out there before I jump into it. I can see how it can be addictive as it's the same with inlay which is sort of the same I guess. I'm interested is seeing some of the jigs used for the tile and line production too. |

There are several websites that have pretty good tutorials on making rosette logs. One is THIS one. Another is on Dave Schramm's site, HERE. I think there are some others, but these are the ones that come to mind. |
