Post subject:  Headstock Veneer Plate Thickness

Getting ready to glue the ebony veneer plate on the headstock of my OOO and noticed it is pretty thick at 1/8". The headstock is 1/2" and I am sandwiching a 1/40" maple plate in between. This will put my headstock at just over 5/8" thick. What thickness do you normally make your veneer plates? I am using Gotoh Schaller style tuners.

Thanks,

Ken

You are right on the limit .... the tuners will just fit.

But I usually shoot for between 580 and 600 - with the thicker plates at about 75-80 at most, otherwise I find it looks too heavy

Tony, thanks for the reply. After I posted my note, I looked at the veneer again and really didn't like it that thick, especially as I'll have a smaller-sized headstock. So I ran it through my thickness sander to get it down to .070". This looks much better to my eye and will buy me a bit more breathing room in mounting my tuners.

Ken, if the veneer plate is too thick, it can also make it difficult to get the strings wrapped low enough for a good break angle.

A thought stirred by the last post from Mr.White... If your headstock is too thin, you can up with the same break angle problem. Not all tuners are the same length... Don't ask me how I know this.
