In a previous post, I mentioned that MidwayUSA has a patternmaker's vise on closeout for $42.44 (plus $20 shipping). The regular price was $82.99. The one I ordered just came in, so thought I would post a pic.

The specifications stated that the jaws opened 5", but I just measured mine and the opening between the wood inserts was 6 1/4". I do think that I will add a layer of leather to the wood jaws. Appears to be a pretty decent vise for 42 bucks.

That's a great price! I'd get one if I already didn't have the StewMac vise. Which I really like with the added options.

That looks just like the one from japan woodworker

But at $43 bucks that's a smoking good deal. I'll have to email that to a few people I know.

SM sells their upgrade parts for the patternmaker's vise, including urethane-lined jaws and a hardware kit to fix the problem with the swivels coming loose. An alternative is round over the outer corners of the wooden faces, line the inners with 1/8" leather, and add a leather safety strap between the jaws.

The other thing that can be done and what I did to keep the bolts from coming loose was to use some semi-permanent loctite at the bolt ends, then snug up so the swivel heads move but with little play. Works perfect.

I like the bearing and the round wheel on mine and that I believe doesn't come with the kit. If I put the guitar in the vise I'll put a piece of wood or something over the rails just in case. I'm thinking about putting some foam over some 1/4" ply to use as jaws like on a trojy until I build one.

Thanks Todd and Rod, I'll make those modifications to my vise.
