Ok - I'm to the point where I need to build a box so I can ship my guitar body and neck to Joe for finishing. He told me that most of you folks have special boxes you've made to send him the guitar.

I'd like to see what you use - and some dimensions would help.

Where did you get the box you started with?

Thanks

I am about to ship one to Joe.
After talking with him I'm using a 24x24x12 heavy duty cardboard box. It will be "lined" (sides, bottom and top) on the inside with 3/16" cabinet back plywood for "puncture" resistance. I bought some scrap furniture foam in 4" thickness from a local upholstery shop. There will be a layer of foam on the bottom, the middle layer will have cut outs for the body, neck and a slot for the bridge so Joe can verify the size and location to be masked off and finally the top layer of foam.
Don't have a photo yet, but this description ought to give you a starting point.
I figure the box ought to last a couple of shipments both ways and then I'll just transfer the innards to a new one. Total cost so far is $15 ( I got scrap plywood from a friend who owns a cabinet shop).

Here are pics of the box I put together. Total weight was 25 lbs and it cost about $35 to ship FedEx ground to Indiana from California.

Top to bottom:

Top layer of 3/16 plywood, ready to tape box shut

Foam wrapped neck and surrounding foam

Body and neck in center section of foam

Box with side and bottom 3/16" plywood before bottom layer of 4" foam

Box with bottom

I've shipped a bunch of guitars in this type of case. I've got two now. They are pretty much indestructible and give peace of mind. Total weight is around 30 lbs with a guitar inside. It's about $50 from MN to California UPS. I got mine from Atlas Cases in Denver. They were around $300 a few years ago but will last forever and can really take a a lickin'. I used cut up egg crate mattresses that the local hospital or nursing homes throw away for padding. So far everything has come through great.
