Today was a great day. Because of a fluke, I wasn't at work. (They are rearranging our cubbie holes.) So, I was here when Rod True sent me an IM alerting me to an ad on Craigslist. There was a Performax 10/20 for sale. The ad said it hadn't been used much and had a few extras. $250 is steep at the moment, but gawd the thing is worth at least $500 or more. So I spoke with the bookkeeper and got a thumbs up. I called and got the good news, it was still available. Off we went to pick it up. It looks like George used it less then a dozen times, or he is related to Hesh. Even though it was uncovered in a working shop, it was all but spotless. It looked better than one on Woodcraft's floor.

As soon as I can bug my brother and get a hold of his camera I'll take pictures.

Yes, Virgina, there is a Santa Claus.

Way to go Lillian. You're going to love it. I got one last May when my income tax money come in. I use it alot. You can of course thickness your tops, backs, sides and even your bracing stock. Make sure you have a dust collection system hooked up or you're going to have dust Everywhere.

Merry Christmas. You have a nice book keeper too. Make sure you level the drum with the conveyor belt. If you don't have the owner's manuel just ask and we'll help you get it set up.

George had the manual and the funky tool to load the paper with. He walked me through loading the paper. Gave me two unopened boxes of paper. Its got great casters on it. The only difference between this one and one from the store is that I don't have to spend a couple of hours bolting everything together. And that is a blessing in and of itself.

I'm sure I'll be asking questions though.

Yeah, I'm sweet on the bookkeeper. I got way lucky there too.

Congrats Lillian my friend you are going to love having a thickness sander. It's one of those "bumps" in building where the cost is difficult but once you have one it eliminates a lot of barriers, perceived or otherwise, to successful and enjoyable guitar building.

As our friend Chuck said there are many things that you can do with one and I am still learning what some of these things are. Recently when I was building some new benches I put my 2 X 4's through my Performax just to start with cleaner wood..... :D

And Rod bro great job of looking out for the interests of your fellow OLFers!

Having a thickness sander sure opens up a lot of opportunities. I have only had mine a short while and I can't figure how I lived without it.

Yeah, I'm loads happy with it and I haven't even touched it really. I wish I had time to spend with it today, but it will have to wait until Sunday.

Oh, if anyone is interested, George has a Jet 18" band saw for sale as well. He's asking $750.00 for it. It looks like its been used a bit, but well maintained. As he was telling us about it I turned to the bookkeeper with an eager look, which was parried with a raised eyebrow. So if you are interested, send me an PM and I'll give you his number. It won't be coming home with me.

No I got lots of machines here right now, the only thing I dont have as of yet is the drumsander !!! But I will make one myself as you know. :D . I am happy that cristmas came fast for you. [:Y:] [:Y:] . Mine did to with all thats in my shop now. I was cutting up braces and right then It would have been real nice to have me one of those JET:s

You got a stand and sandpaper with it too? The stand alone is 125 bucks from Woodcraft and the grit is like 38 bucks. And only paid $250 for it?
You sure got one humdinger of a buy. Tell Honeybunch, you just saved him about $500 smackaroos.


I'd love to get that bandsaw. I've been pineing for one for a while now. It would take a lot to ship it to Illinois I reckon.

Well, actually Chuck, its closer to $850, without tax and shipping, if you were to price out a new one. The best price I could find for the sanding unit itself was at Sears, go figure. It also had the infeed/outfeed tables as well. So when you add the tables and just tax, its safe to say that I made out like a bandit. Which is why Sweetie didn't blink when I got the IM from Rod, bless him, with the ad info.

Now about that bandsaw, if you are willing to pay for it, I'll store it for you until you can get out here to pick it up. Won't even charge you the half a tank of diesel it will cost me to go get it.

Score is right! I have the 10-20 and absolutely love it. Go to Klingspor for some of that blue paper, 80 grit and a 2x2x12" gum rubber bar. Stuff lasts forever.

You will find yourself using that tool for all kinds of tasks. Slow does not matter unless you are in mass production. And really, its not that slow.

Thanks for the tip Mike. It might be a while, but I'll pick up some Klingspor paper. George gave me two combo boxes of Preformax paper. I have no idea how long that will last.

Right now I'm rearranging the shop to give it a new home. I did run a board through a couple of time to get a feel for it. The ShopVac isn't going to cut it for dust collection that's for sure. But for now, the vac and a mask will have to work.

Lillian I am able to get away with just 134 CPM of dust collection (Festool) with the 10-20 and one of the reasons why is that I used masking tape and taped over all of the openings in the hood on the back side. This really helped to channel the suction where it needed to be.

Also good dust collection also serves to help keep the drum cooler which in turn will help the paper not gum up. You may be able to make it work with a shop-vac, masking tape, and a new or very clean filter in the vac so it pulls the maximum. I always timed my major thickness sanding for when I am starting a new build and have just replaced the bag in the vac.

Hesh, do you have your vacuum connected to a mini cyclone unit?

Great tip about taping up the gaps around the shroud. I need to change the filter on the Shop Vac, so now's a good time. Thanks.
