I bought this starrett 1010 on ebay for $50... It's the perfect tool for checking thicknesses on just about anything that goes through your thickness sander...

Fifty Bucks! A lot more money than you really need to spend.

I made a mounted stand using a non-Starrett dial incicator for less than $10! I calibrate it with a known thickness after which it's just as accurate.
