I order eyelets from AllParts, but they're not the same. The old ones were smaller diameter posts, holes, and eyelets than what's available from guitar suppliers today. Yet another thing I've always wanted to do is get some accurate replacement grommets. All they really are is just stamped eyelets, made probably more for quilting, tents, card eyelets, boot lace eyelets, flags and banners, etc. - The guitar industry grew up on parts borrowed from other industries, making their own only when absolutely necessary.

I'm sure the right sized eyelets are out there somewhere, but I haven't found them yet. Then again, I haven't really tried that hard either - could be simple as a trip to the fabric store, though I'm guessing eyelets there might be a little lighter gauge. I'll have to take measurements of some old ones some time, and see if I can find some good replacements.

Well I'll be....

I'll have to measure some old ones out, but these may very well be smaller than the eyelets AllParts has available.

Ah, you're right. I measured some of the Allparts eyelets that never quite worked for me, and StewMac's appear to be exactly the same. Still, it seems like they must be out there somewhere. Do some google searches on things like "Nickel eyelets" and you'll see ton's of manufacturers for various industries.

I don't think I have any guitars in the shop with the old eyelets we're talking about, but if anyone can get some accurate measurements of the inner and outer diameters, face diameter, and depth, it may be worth writing some of the eyelet manufacturers to see if there's something readily available being made for another market.

Tandy Leather Factory has 3/16, 1/4, and 5/16 nickel eyelets. Don't know if any of those sizes work, but they have them FWIW.
