Has anyone used this product "CrystaLac Wood Grain Filler" http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?Offerings_ID=17353 It looks like it may be an alternative to Epoxy Fred Tellier |

It worked well enough, I thought, on my first Ash body, which has pores like railway tunnels. I think the only reason I moved away from it was my tub got old, and Z-poxy started getting such good press here. Jim |

I use it and like it ! BUT----You have to seal the wood with Shellac first!! Because the water which is the solvent will raise Heck with your wood. It's a simple matter of getting used to a product . I used lacquer for over 20 years with regular fillers and all was fine except the smell and chemicals! The clear really lets your woods look real ? Their natural color ! Howard, I agree that I have never found a waterbased topcoat that floats my boat, but a waterbased filler or sanding sealer cut back to bare wood when pores are level is an avenue I am exploring now. I am curious-- Why is it that you categorically dismiss waterbased finishes ? -Tom |

Bad experience with one waterbased filler (LMI microbeads), which appeared to have filled and then dropped way down into the pores when lacquered. Also general suspicion of a class of product that gets reinvented every few years with the claim repeated that all its problems have now been solved and it's now just as good as solvent based. I'll take the stuff that it's supposed to be just as good as, thanks. |
