I have been talking to folks at SMC about how to kid proof my big power tools. They are all Jet tools. I finally learned that the green power switch has a small diameter hole through it, enough to put a normal sized finish nail through it (less than 1/8" diameter). Problem is, I can'tfind ANYTHING lock wise that will work with this. I am looking for ideas. A cable lock might work, but then again, it might be too flexible, allowing the power button to be depressed anyways. There has to be an "out of the box" solution, I just cannot find it or think of the correct search words. Help please!

I want something that uses a keyed lock.

Why would Jet provide the hole and no custom locking tool?

Mike

Mike, when my kids were young I found some small pad locks that would fit through the little hole in the plug, preventing it from being able to be plugged in.
If you can't find any small pad locks search for "lock out / tag out" supplies. There will be items you can lock over the plug.
Good luck.

Teeny tiny little luggage locks may work. They won't be super sturdy, but they should keep it locked up.

Why not just turn the breakers off? You could always put a lock on the breaker box if they were really determined to build something.

My brother just uses a piece of solid copper wire, jacketed of course, just a scrap piece of romex. I mean how old are your kids and how secure does it really need to be?

Of course you should disable the equipment as you plan, but remember that the blades are still sharp and still a bit dangerouse even when not powered, so also try to keep the kids out of the room. Belt and suspenders.

I cut my hand on an exposed table saw blade that was not running when I reached accross the table to get the test gage.

I remember reading in FWW years back about a guy who would turn off the pony panel breaker to his shop every time he left it .. He mused that way if someone broke in, they wouldnt dull all his blades cutting up dirty wood lying around wow7-eyes .

how about locking the door to your shop ????

Well, as it turns out (for all you Jet tool owners), you can buy the lockout from www.wmhtoolgroup.com. Part number is 709012-A, costs $7.99. You have to create an account online with them (no big deal) and then the shopping cart appears.

Problem solved. Thanks!

I was under the impression that since 1996 all floor model power tools came with a removable power switch lock pin (yellow 2 prong pin that inserts into the power switch. Which when removed made the switch inoperable.) if this is the case remove the key when not in use.

Craftsman products have had a switch like that, but I'm not sure about the rest of them. My Jet bandsaw did not, though my new Grizzly has a key. My other tools are much older and I've upgraded their switches to newer switches.

I think it is a requirement that this class of too have a inclusive locking power switch of some sort since 1996 as not only my crafts man but ridgid and all my floor tools have that type of switch.

Hmm. Interesting. But none of mine have that. Just a single hole through the green power button where one can insert something to keep the button from being depressed. All of my stuff is most definitely new. And none of it came with that lockout I mentioned above.
