I was at a local folk festival this past weekend and saw a friend's Zoom H2 digital recorder. Seemed like a pretty nice little package. He sent me a few audio samples; they sounded quite good. I'm thinking of getting one to record my guitars so I can put sound clips on my web site. Anybody used one? Pat |

Pat check out taropatch.net (/general/da kine music gear). There was an extensive discussion regarding the merits of various field recorders. I ended up buying the Olympus LS-10. |

I love my Zoom H2 and highly recommend it, but I don't use it to record sound clips of guitars for posting on the web. I haven't done that at all, but if I were planning to do it, I'd be inclined to use high quality studio mics and record directly onto my Mac. That said, I think you'll be very impressed with the recording quality of the H2, and may find it to be up to snuff for the task. |

Todd, I'm sort of torn about whether to use high-quality mics or the H2. As I understand it though, the H2 facilitates plugging mics into it and feeding into a USB port on a computer. I can get a like-new, used-once H2 for $125 so I'm feeling like I ought to just grab it and see what it will do. Ricardo, That taropatch site is great! I've been thinking about getting into slack-key, being from Hawaii, and having heard some slack-key at the folk festival. taropatch just might be the tipping point! Thanks guys, Pat |

Mark has a great review of the Zoom 2. Is your TP handle Ricardo there? Mike |

I've had one for quite a while and am happy with it, I use it for recording the guitar workshops I attend and for recording practice sessions. It also does a good job as a USB port mic on my laptop, but is not going to give the results of an expensive mic. The only drawback is the display is small for my 60 year old eyes and the material the outer casing looks like it will not take a lot of abuse. Fred Tellier |

I don't have an H2 but do have an H4 which is very nice. The built in mikes are really really good considering the price I paid for the whole device. It's also got combo XLR 1/4" plugs for mic/instrument input and phantom power. The recording quality is very good. On top of that, it's got a tuner, metronome and a hard to use 4 track recorder (records 2 tracks at a time). The H2 also looks pretty darn sweet and ideally I'd have both. I'd say that the H2 would be best used as an always on you type of recorder where the H4 is more of a semi pro type of device. I only say that because of the ability to plug in external mics with phantom power. I've recorded a few music camp concerts and some solo work with my H4 both with external mics and the internals and it does a very good job. |

At that price, I'd snap it up for sure, especially if you don't already have a little portable digital recorder of some kind. I think you'll find it a great asset. I use mine for all kinds of things. |
