Other than they're lighter weight so easier to handle why a laminate trimmer? This stems from my binding question really if your making a doolan style jig with a counter weight why a laminate trimmer. In a store near me they have a clearance offer on a router for £10 so I could easily pick one up and just have it dedicated left in the cradle that's all

cost less. they are all that is needed. why get a freight train to move a car, when a tow trunck will do the same thing for less. why get a big router, when lam trimmer will do the same job, just as well, and not make a bit of difference.

For something dedicated to a task .. no reason why you cant set up a larger router. I have a crapper of a Skil I got on CC points that were about to run out - only takes 1/4 inch bits, the lock on the plunge isnt that tight for most things - so its got a flush trim bit in it, and I only use it to trim tops and backs.

For all my other stuff I use PC 7310s .. all my jigs are set up for them .. they are cheap and reliable, and easily transferred from one jig to another. I usually keep a different bit in each motor, so I can simply swap out the bases to get what I am after .. 7 and counting ...

Smaller base is a big part of the issue. using a full size router your donut that indexes the top or back would have to be considerably taller to keep the back of a full sized router base form touching out against the top of back

To add to what Michael was saying...if your donut gets taller, then your bit may have to stick out of the collet further to get the working area to the guitar. That can become dangerous.

If you can get it to work for your specific application...go for it. I have one laminate trimmer and actually, I can think of several good reasons to have a couple more. Of course, all tools are like that for me.
