Hi...I'm putting together a tele & was using copper paper to shield the cavities last night, I was using 60/40 solder b/c it's what I had but the reference article I was reading said to use resin core. I'm wondering what the differences are between the two & if I shouldve followed the directions more closely. I need more paper before I can finish the job & see if it worked...thanks! Also, it seems like mostly acoustic builders here so if anyone can recommend forums/websites for electrics that'd be great. Thanks again! |

WWW.Reranch.com look for the discusion link. Lots of guys building Tele/Stat guitars with amazing results. As long as the solder made a good connection to the foil, you should be ok. The rosin core helps to clean and adhear the solder to the foil. J |

In that sort of application, solder is really solder. As long as you don't cold flow (or heat the solder up so it "flows" on itself but not onto the part/ lead) you'll be fine. Resin core solder (again, partially depending on its composition) may gain you an advantage as its flows more easily and distributes heat more evenly - producing consistent soldering results. You'll be fine...where possible ensure that a good mechanical connection is made first, so the parts/ wires are anchored together - then use the solder to merge them... Stephen |

I started off at www.projectguitar.com You might want to give that a go. The different core wire is only for adhesion/cleanliness. All solder will conduct/shield, so as long as it's sticking on there, you should be fine. Good luck! |

I've used copper shielding on all of my cavities as well. There is no need to solder to each panel to make the connection because it has conductive adhesive (assuming you use the same stuff from SM). Just overlap slightly. The only time I apply solder (resin core for electronic application) is when I connect a ground wire to the bridge. Geeze...when are we going to have an electric section! We've only been bit***ing about this for 2 years! We keep sending the Electro-People away...why? Perhaps there's more interest in the Resonator Section? |
