Post subject:  Source for Applewood bindings?

I saw pics of a Petros guitar that has applewood bindings, but I don't see them listed on any supplier sites. Any ideas who can supply this type of binding?

I was also thinking light coloured Koa could be an acceptable substitute.

Thanks,

Laurie

Have you thought of using cherry? It can have real nice ray-flakes when quartersawn.Apple wood is pretty rare as most sawyers don't do much of it as most apple trees are pruned to have short trunks at an early age.You might run across 34" stock, but 64" would be real hard to find.Apple would be a great wood for bindings,as it is very hard and durable, but so is cherry.

Laurie, I don't know if they have what you are looking for, but Certainly Wood is worth checking out. I know they carry apple, but I don't know if it will be thick enough for your liking.

I cut some applewood 20 years ago & still have some in a barn 1.5hrs west of Ottawa where I live. I was reminded of it lately when I was going through some of my wood there but didn't give it a second thought. Next time I'm there I guess I'll see if I have anything at 3 ft. I remember barely, the heart being tan colour & the sapwood being light? Another one I had & did bring back but not long enough for bindings was hop hornbeam 'ironwood' which is lighter than maple but not quite as light as holly.

Thanks Mike - Please let me know if it is a suitable size for bindings and we can work something out (Canadian tire money, Air Miles, rolled pennies, etc) :)
