Post subject:  Handles VS Real Names

We have tried from the start of the OLF to ask that we all use our real names instead of handles.
We just made a new addition to the registration process that reads....

PLEASE NOTE. Our board requires you to register using your REAL NAME and not an ambiguous handle. Accounts built that are not clearly tied to an individual will be deleted. We do this to ensure the harmony of our board and discourage bad behavior of members who feel that they can hide behind the anonymity of a handle. You will also need a valid e-mail address before your account is activated. The administrator will review your account and if approved you will receive an e-mail at the address you specified.

This is ONLY for NEW members. With that said, if ANYBODY would like us to change your handle to your name, just let me know in a PM. Id be happy to!

Good move Lance. I'd also like to encourage people, if they feel they have to hide behind a handle, to at least sign their messages with their given name. It's so much more friendly and I hate having to address someone as, for instance, 'mandodiddle'. (Sorry mandodiddle)

Is there an option for members that got their names in before this change to switch their username to an anonymous handle? ^^

This is a nice little community, but the Internet is a big place. There are many perfectly valid reasons why one might choose not to display their full name on a forum accessible to every single person in the entire world. You already have the ability to discourage bad behavior by closing or deleting inappropriate threads and banning those who misbehave. I don't see this new policy giving you any greater control. I do see it possibly suppressing new membership and/or prompting people to register under fake names.

Why did I know someone would have a problem with this!

We have always encouraged folks to register with there real name and NOT a silly handle. When we moved to the new software ( Jan 22 2008 ) that suggestion did not get written in to the
registration process. We have corrected that now.
Its not a "power" issue. Its a community issue. We like names, not handles.

There is also the issue with spammers, I have never seen one register here with something that remotely resembles a name. So names are good! handles are not.

No problem here. I just thought I'd share a different perspective. I like names, that's why I close each of my messages with mine.

It's a big world, with lots of perspectives. That's all I'm saying.

I just wanted to say thanks. I've wanted to change my user name for some time, but didn't want to re-register. Lance fixed me right up! Except now I kicked back when I forget and log in as "westex93". Oh well, I'll eventually get used to it...

I added my name to my signature line a long time ago. As most here seem to agree, I think that, at least, isn't asking too much of folks.

Yeah, or "Colin Chapman", but that was already taken!
A few drops through that turn separates the racers from the "posers".;)

For a look at my latest diversion check out this link:

It's not a vintage racer, but it sure is fun on the back roads of the Sierra foothills!

Hank is your avatar the cork screw on Laguna Seca? I use a nick but it is my real first name with my location and is the same one I use everywhere I can on the net....I understand the reason but am glad I came in when it was ok plus easier to remember my user name in all the places I hang out (lots)

Hank, the 7 has to be the ultimate race car thinly disguised as a street car. It's one of the most responsive cars (or race cars) ever made and that one looks great. To me it was the
best car to be designed by Lotus and Chapman. I really love those cars.

I've been down the corkscrew at Laguna many times as I'm Race Operations director there.
It's truly and experience you never forget. Most of the time I've been in Formula cars so I'm sitting a couple of inches off the race surface. The best E ticket ride out there. It's great
in other cars as well. We've had a bear of a time resurfacing that area, most asphalt companies just about give up when they see that drop off. We had to resurface the whole
track twice in 2 years just to get it right. At around 800,000 bucks, that hurts.
We had one bump the MotoGP riders hated so, acting on some advice from European track experts, we got out our thickest, steel plates and placed them right over the bump and then
bought all the charcoal we could find and had one major BBQ. It worked, track is smooth and perfect now.

Best
Bruce

OK, my name has changed, there are no links to my web page nor any other site that contains data about me or my instruments. From now on, I am just "joe the instrument builder" bliss

Thanks for the opportunity to change this.
