| Post subject: | Eclipse Honing Guide Knock Off? |
Where can I find one of these Eclipse knock offs? I've seen several sites all saying that they're great. Am I really better off with one of them instead of the Veritas? I remember hearing such great things about the Veritas. What happened? |

I just noticed LN has a jig based on the Eclipse. The Lee Valley is considerably more than the LN. I don't want to blow money unnecessarily. Is the LN jig good enough? |

Todd, your praise for the Eclipse style was a big deciding factor. I was going to go the whole 9 yards with the LV stuff. But some posts I found regarding people having trouble with the MK II plus your posts saying how it's possible to achieve good and even better results with the Eclipse-type made me have second thoughts about the Lee Valley System. I went with an Eclipse clone from LN, and saved a lotta money in the process! I saw an old post you made with links to sharpening videos on Youtube. I believe you were in one video sharpening a chisel with this jig and some sandpaper on glass. I saw 5 sheets of sandpaper. What grits were they? And I assume that demonstration was to show how to really fine tune a blade, not bring an oldie back from the dead, right? Also, how would I use a side clamping guide to hone a convex plane iron? Is it possible? |

Get the Veritas, it's excellent and very very easy to setup and use. You don't want anything complicated or something that's difficult to remember how to use or you'll never use it and you want to be able to sharpen quicly and accurately to be able to produce your best work.
