| Post subject: | Neck binding/purfling question |
On my current (fourth) guitar, I had a go at binding/purfling the fingerboard. Attachment: fb binding.JPG I like the contrast of the black purfling along the neck shaft, but don't like it once it reaches the top. Is there another approach here, other than to forget the purfling ? Frank |

There is but you have to think about neck fit up carefully and step the binding and FB at the joint. In other words the neck gets set purfling depth loser and the fretboard and binding from the joint forward is thinned to meat the top. This is not an easy fit up to pull off well. but is do-able. Another options is to cut a purfling channel in the neck and the bind and FB is as normal. This is easly done on a router table and solves the stepped FB issue |

I may and probably not understanding the question right. I am guessing talking about purfeling along the fingerboard. If so, just do the math to narrow the fingerboard at the nut and 12th, carrying it to the end of board. Glue the purfeling to the binding or sandwich it along side the board and binding and just glue it in like the binding. If talking about purfeling on bottom of binding and also purf between binding and board, same thing. Again, not feeling well today, so may not understand the question. If not sorry. I also carry the binding and purfeling alway around the headstock, making a stop at the nut. |

I belive he is talking under the fretboard between the neck and binding |

This is easly done on a router table and solves the stepped FB issue I think I prefer this option, because if I'm still trying to tweak the neck angle and alignment after gluing on the f'board, this is straight forward. However, if I went the purfling line to be continuous around the headstock, I guess I will need to continue the channel around it as well - but as you say, straight forward with router. Thanks.
