Larry bro do you mean the back joint reinforcement (inside of the guitar) or a back strip (outside of the guitar)?

The way the question was put has to mean the inside of the guitar. Not sure why to do that, but then some folks like to make laminated back spars too.

Intersting thought. It would certainly add to the strength of the joint.

I think he may have been taking about a back headstock veneer as well.

Fish paper (AKA Black Fiber) works best on edge. Flat on, you'll have to dye it to make the colour consistent if you sand it at all (which is what is done at some guit. manufacturers). Edge on, it always looks good and black, so if it's a layer in a veneer sandwich then it'll look great.

Hesh I think Larry's referring to the back of the headstock as a veneer under a wood overlay so that it appears as a black line.

Yes guys, Bob is the "winnah of the chicken dinnah"! I'm speaking of the overlay on the back of the headstock...so, it's okay to use say, a layer of black/white/black respectively, and have it show as an edge all the way around?

Don't. You need the tensile shear, and peeling strength of wood. You can use black dyed veneer, but most of that seems to be structurally messed up by the dying process. Best I have seen for the purpose is black dyed holly. You can get it from LMI.
