Post subject:  Removing binding tape residue
Can anyone give me suggestions on removing the glue residue from SM Binding tape? I taped up my back bindings using SM tape but I did not use a heat gun to remove, now I have alot of tape residue on the B/S. Are there any solvents that will remove this?

Richard buddy yep Naptha works great on many adhesives.

I am wondering though what kind of glue you used? With Titebond and SM tape I don't get any residue. The guys that use CA do get some residue and some of them use other tape which does better with CA. It you are using CA let us know and some of our CA users who have alternative tape suggestions will be able to help you out so that this does not happen next time.

Yes there is a glue to tape relationship that is possible.

CA users have reported that the SM tape leaves residue and have found other tapes that provide better performance in the not leaving residue department. I can't remember the recommended tape, because I don't use CA, but JJ has encountered this problem, residue from SM tape with CA and switched to another tape.

The SM tape is fine with Titebond though and of course there is the consideration of how long, in terms of weeks....., someone might leave the tape on. Personally I find it difficult to leave the tape on long enough.....:)

I'll ask JJ to weigh-in here and let us know what tape he uses with CA and that does not leave residue.

Bringing up the type of glue used is to me just part of considering the big picture of the process and hence important to consider too when suggesting possible solutions. It very well could be that removing residue is an issue that can be eliminated for Richard all together which in my way of thinking is the goal. Right? :)

When using CA, I use 3M fiber-reinforced strapping tape. The glue is tenacious and doesn't react with CA like the glue on the brown tape. Many of my problems went away when I switched to the stronger tape.

Plus the CA will not attach to the mylar base of the 3m fiber inforced tape near as bad as it sticks to the paper of the Stewmac binding tape.

Oh yea! It is the clear packing tape with fiberglass strips in it. I know you have seen it for years. Some times referred to as strapping tape. many manufactures make it but the 3M has better adhesion and uses a Mylar with a very low friction coefficient that helps keep CA for adhering the tape to the wood.

I use strapping tape and CA. I also remove the residue with napha.

I'm starting to have problems finding narrow strapping tape locally. I like 1" or 3/4" rolls and it seems local suppliers are all carrying 2" rolls now. I order most of my tape from U-line now although the price is a little steep. I've found that you get what you pay for with tape and the well known brand names are better in the long run.

I'm quite keen to build one of these style jigs as there is no UK source of the binding tape

Jeremy Knight halfway down, My thinking is by low tack tape for the bottom and any cheap tape for the backer tape
