The varnish is an oil based varnish that is very similar to the Cremonese recipe. It is beautiful but very fragile and slow to cure. Most of my violins are varnished using Pratt & Lambert 38 oil varnish. Please don't tell the violin snobs!!! I would be cast into outer darkness. I use fresh made ultra blond shellac as my ground coat. The Italian type varnish is more beautiful and has more depth but it is very expensive. It cost me almost $100.00 to varnish one violin using that product. If it would cure quicker I would probably use it all the time. I have a new sound clip up on my web site. It is Darol Anger playing a 3 octave scale and then the Ashokan Farewell. I hope to get more sound clip up soon. The title song for the new James Bond movie has one of my violins used in the soundtrack. It was played by Lyndsay Pruett who is a sessions player in Nashville. She was hired to play on the song that features Alisha Keys. The song sucks!!! |

Thanks Dave. Good eye...yes the outline is the Guarnari "Cannone" The f-holes are my variation of his f-holes. The pattern has been expanded slightly to accommodate the "C" string. It needs more internal air volume for resonance than a standard violin body. |

No Alex the varnish formula is not a secret. I buy it from Joe Robson. He is a varnishmaker and has an entire system. from a balsam oil ground to Alizarin colors and the final coat. If you google Joe Robson you can find his website. He is a great guy and good to work with. |

Learning to take good photographs is a whole new learning experience. When I get the question about "how long does it take to learn to build instruments?" sometimes I forget about all the other things we have to learn like website development, photography etc. |
