Hello all...

Does anyone have any idea what this is?

I got it from a luthier's garage who recently passed away.
It is old, and smells like garage :(, so no hints there...

Thanks for your help!

Another vote for Fir.

I can't say for sure just looking at those photos but it could definately be spruce..

The sapwood hasn't been trimmed off, it stained before it was processed/dried and it looks like full of pitch.

I don't know much about fir but if you fall a spruce tree in the spring/early summer thats what happens to it.

My guess is Douglas fir.

looks a lot like sugar pine to me (a type of white pine)

http://www.woodfinder.com/woods/scans/sugar_pine.jpg

I've used it a few times as a trim carpenter, and prefer more solid typical white pine....this stuff tends to route poorly and a climb cut is pretty much required and even that leaves a lot of fur...

Mike, nope we use Marine grade balsa wood, it is just stronger and tougher than the other grades or civilian spruce.
