Post subject:  Need diamond sharpening stone source
Hey guys and girls...I threw out my ancient waterstones when I moved the shop...now my chisels are dull and it's time for new stones...I'm after the diamond ones now, but had to sit down for a while when I saw what LMI gets for their combo one...($115!)...so, I looked at Woodcraft, Rockler, and locally...can't find exactly what I want...I'm thinking a combo fine/extra fine, or if I must, one of each on the one-sided type...have you guys and girls found a good place to get these?

Stew-Mac has some diamond stones that they sell for leveling frets - and they're less expensive than the same stones at Woodcraft!

Larry, following Todd's advice, I ordered a Norton 8000 stone yesterday from Hartville. They had the best price I could find and shipping was free. Their prices for the DMT diamond plates is more than reasonable. I'll be picking up one next month to round out my sharpening center.

After I purchased the Norton, I came across [url]=ttp://www.craftsmanstudio.com/html_p/Q!0000000.htm/url]Shapton GlassStone Waterstones[/url] They are the same price and I think shipping is free as well. They state that they are denser, so you don't have to soak them in water and will last 4 to 5 times longer. They have 16000 and 30000 grit stones. Worth a look.

Todd, I just got a Norton 4000/ 8000 stone and DMT 325/ 1200 setup. Will that work or should I change them out?

I have the three 6" stones; the extra-fine gets edges to a mirror. I've used the coarse one, with a magnetic handle, for removing fret metal past the 14th fret.

My two bigger diamond "stones", I've had for round 20 years.
