Post subject:  autumn leaves

Hi All,
Recently i was cutting some old wood known locally as 'Rengas' aka Borneo rosewood.
and came up with this idea of using it for inlay.
Enjoy!
Jeff

Impresively awesome.

Two things:
1- I'm jealous I haven't thought of that myself.
2- I'm definetely going to steal this 'leaf' idea from you sometime!

Jeff--very creative, very clever!
What is the white "wrapper" around the leaves?

Jeff my friend you are one very, very talented Luthier - great idea and beautiful work.

Is that a Macassar ebony fret board?

Sweet…you do know that you’ll have to cover the other three seasons now.

I'm glad you guys enjoyed.
Hesh, its a MB fretboard.
Hi Howard! great to hear from U, not NAMM, I'll be at the HGF. See ya!
Well, I think for the next 3 seasons I'm running out of idea.
Winter - naked branches
Summer - blacken and burned branches
Spring - wait till I digged some spalted roots with pink coloration
Thanks again!
God Bless!
Jeff
PS, here's another different version ...

Hesh, I believe "MB" would be Malaysian blackwood.

Wow! How cool is that? Thanks for showing us that. [clap]

Maybe I misunderstood the details, but would it not make more sense to shape each leaf afterwards? (variability, flexibilty, etc)

Mike

(never mind, I just noticed the white fiber material...good idea, way to go!)

Hi Mike, those white lining are maple veneer, I wrapped ( super glued )the whole 'log' before cutting into slices.
Yes, Todd, its malaysian blackwood (MB)

Thanks,
Jeff

BOY would I love to see this thread! It must be the phase of the moon; every few weeks the forum dumps me at odd times. I've had to sign back in after every mouse click this session, and it won't show me the pictures.

The reason I'm interested, of course, is that I made some autumn leaves myself a few years back. MIne were tiny; 3.5mm square, and each has 20 pieces of wood in it. I made them with plane jigs, and it tok about 90 hours all told to make them. You seem to have gotten there with less effort, and I'd love to see how they turned out. You can look at mine on my web site:
www.alcarruthluthier.com
under 'New Work', iirc.
I used bloodwood, purpleheart, boxwood, and some stuff I salvaged locally that I think is from 'burning bush'. Under the circumstances I'm not even going to try to post a picture.
