Normally, sides are let into the neck on classicals. Is the cutaway side done like a steel string guitar?

Yes!
I slot the bass side (for a righty) and undercut the treble side the thickness of my side-2mm-.
This way I still have a Sp. foot with one side in a slot -the other glued to the side of the block so it is flush with the f.b. when done!

Or this way .. Alhambra .... slotted heel on bass side, glued to the side of the block treble side, then carve away.

I found this web site a while ago. http://www.dicarloguitars.com/home/ Search around a bit and you'll find alot of pictures of the cutaways from all angles.

It appears the neck/neck block is longer than normal and the slot on the cutaway side is moved further into the body than the non-cutaway side. The location of the slot depends on how much of a cutaway you want. When you look at the cutaway you actually see the extended neck rather than the bent side. (There are pictures on the web site that will show this better than my description).

They don't look like a typical steel string cutaway, but after awhile the look kind of grows on you. I like it. I think he is a fairly well known builder. There was a piece on him in Just Jazz Guitar magazine a few years ago.

I build the the same way as my regular guitars-except I use an archtop style heel,so there is no ledge where the heel meets the body.
