Any recommendations for online sources for smaller quantities of quartersawn mahogany for neck and tail blocks?

If you are in Chicago, check Owl Lumber. The Des Plaines store is the largest, then the one out west. The new one in the south suburbs in a bit smaller, but also can have what you need. They will have many sizes you can pick through.

There's probably half a dozen sponsors at the top of this page that could help out.

Hey Doug,

You'll have a tough time finding what your looking for at the Lombard Owl. They have a lot of big stuff, 6/4 x 8 x10', but I haven't found any nice smaller pieces lately. I haven't been to the other two stores so I'm not sure what they have. If you want to take a trip out to Sycamore, The Hardwood Conection is an excelent place to spend some cash. I was thinking about going out there in the next couple of weeks. Let me know if you want to ride along.

I had my first visit to Owl in Des Plaines last weekend...nice store and great selection but VERY expensive. Check out the Zootman (RC Tonewoods)...he always has what you need at a fair price.

If you can't find it local I have quite a bit on hand and I am also about to process up 4 or 500 bdft of Honduras Mahogany in various guitar parts.

The Des Plaines store has resaw capability. I don't live in Chicago anymore, but when I was there, the mahogany was only about 1/2 the cost as from the major luthier suppliers. They also occasionally have quarter sawn Spanish Cedar.

If you go to the Lombard store, you will be within one mile of Hauserman's Orchids, which is worth a trip in itself.

Thanks for the suggestions. Given my miniscule output, a little mahogany will go a long way. I thought there may be some online lumber suppliers selling smaller cut-off sized pieces rather than larger expensive planks or full neck blanks. Kiln cut-offs sounds like the ticket if I can find a partial pallet around here instead of a full $400 one.

I don’t suppose there would be any structural issue with a two piece neck block glue-up to achieve the required thickness?
