I own a dozen or so two cherries (hirsch chisels are exactly the same..same factory, just a different stamp) and theyhave always done me very well. You can never have too many chisels... just ask John Watkins.

Chisels are a very classy gift, you can't go wrong there.

As an alturnative, How about the full set of Gauged Nut Slotting Files from Stew Mac. If he's doing repairs as well as building he'll have need for most of them at some point.

A Lie-Nielson block plane would be fantastic.

How about a super nice Blue Spruce paring chisel (1/2") with a Coco or African Blackwood handle? It's a gift that will get used much like the 2 Cherries set it's also something that may be destined to become a personal favorite of your friend. The one I ordered was here in about 10 days.

You could simply get a gift certificate to StewMac or some similar place...

I recently received my BlueSpruce 1/2" paring Chisel (w/ Curly Maple paring handle) - it took 2 weeks and then a couple more days for delivery.

Thank you, all great suggestions. I really wanted to do the Blue Spruce chisels - I personally ended up buying the LN cocobolo chisels and fretted over that purchase, so the Blue Spruce was appealing as a gift. My understanding was 6-8 week delivery on the paring chisel, so I'll drop them a note and find out.

The other suggestions were great ... thought about the nut files, considered the block plane, hadn't thought of a gift certificate ... all things I'll consider if the Blue Spruce chisels are not in quick supply.

Thanks!

Filippo

i just ordered the paring chisel yesterday, of course i didn't read the part about 6-8 week lead time until today...
oh well, i'm sure it's going to be a great tool when it finally arrives...
