| Post subject: | Woolson neck tenon jig Overview |
I am still going through my Jig making stage. I want to be as prepped as I can before I get started on my guitar. I am thinking that my next couple of jigs will be the Woolson neck tenon jig and possibly the Williams binding jig (I’ not sure which route I’m going here yet). Does anyone know of a description\tutorial for the Woolson Jig? Are plans still available from this site, or is there somewhere else that these can be picked up? Also are there plans for the Williams binding jig? Thanks, John |

I'd PM Brock or Lance for Woolson/Fox neck jig plans. I don't think there is a tutorial on the use or making of it though, but if you do a search you should find enough information on it to get you through. Also, you can go to Don Williams website here there should be everything you need to build the Williams/Fleischman binding jig. |

I may have one set of these around. And I can print more if necessary. I used this jig for quite a while and I really liked it a lot. It helps dial in the neck angle very very close. However, about a year ago I bought the bigger more sophisticated one from Luthier Tool and wow... that thing is beyond wonderful. Not only does it dial in the angle perfectly, but it also adjusts so that the set lines up dead on center. After you cut the mortise and the cheeks of the heel it requires (usually) no more than a dozen strokes with the sand paper to get a perfect neck set. The only down side is it is pretty expensive. |

More unsolicited jig opinions....  On the williams/fleishman binding jig. I like it. It is nice, but it requires a huge footprint and I find the fine adjustment for depth a bit awkward. I am sort of on the hunt for "the last binding system I will ever need" and before I build a pure fleishman style jig I am going to try the hand held unit from luthier tool. That looks like it is fast to set up and does a good job. |

Brock, I’d be interested in the neck jig plans if you can scrounge up a set. I’m sort of at the opposite end of the spectrum from you as I am looking for the “first binding system I’ll ever need.” And hopefully it will be the last. Actually this will be the second as I have the Stew Mac dremmel attachment that I was going to use on my uke. I decided not to bind it so I’m still on my first binding job. I like the look of the luthier tools binding jig. It is a bit spendy, but when you figure in the fact that you don’t need to buy one of the bearing/bit sets and the cost to build a dedicated “machine” it sort of evens out. As a first time builder it would be cool if there was a vendor that would sort of rent out some of the tools for your first couple of builds. It seams like every specialty tool I need adds $100 to the first build. And I'm since I haven't done the job before, I'm not ever suer if that is the right tool for me. It would be nice to give some a test run. Of course that is a bit off topic. John |
