In the Kinkead book, he says that, when fitting the Dovetail join, to leave the neck a little proud, my question is how proud is a little proud? also why should I do this? Thank for all you help thus far ![]() ![]() |

so you'll have material to remove from the cheeks when you're setting the neck angle to the body |

Proud of the guitar top at the joint. When fitting the neck to the body you will remove more material from the cheeks of the heel and this will loosen your dovetail somewhat so leaving the neck a bit proud of the top means you may not have to shim the dovetail when everything is angled and fitted. Gee, I hope this makes sense. Cal |

but this is during fitting the neck to the body, his last instruction involving the dovetail join is to leave the neck slightly proud? should I do this? or just make it flush with the sound board? I'm very confused now... have i just got the wrong end of the stick (again)? lol |

I have never seen the book you talk about, but if you can't seat the fingerboard extension flush to the top by dry clamping, you won't be able to seat it flush with glue in the joint--if that's what you are talking about. |

I leave my neck slightly proud of the sound board before glue up.,....about the thickness of a credit card. Clamping pressure will push the neck down flush with the top. If youve got a few shims on the bottom of the tenon then these are going to compress up a little bit. Of course one day Ill do an M and T dovetail joint where NO shims are involved!
