Post subject:  What Wood? Any Clues

Above is a picture of some wood I've layed my hands on enough for a fingerboard and bridge just wanted to know what it is, and where is a better place to ask than this. The owner has had it 30+ years and was given it by a friend who worked in the docks where it was thrown out as it was with a batch of teak and obviously wasn't.

The guesses so far are
1. Brazillian Rosewood
2. Imbuya
idunno

It has a distinctive smell when worked but not the sweet smell of the brazillian I've handled, but this was fresh cut the stuff I've only handled was decades old

Is that a fresh face or is it an old oxidized surface. If old, sand or plane so we can see a fresh face.

It certainly looks like old Braz.!!
But there are many species that are great for guitars!!
Use it & after you cut into it deep it may let loose another fragrance!

Hey guys this picture must be linked from a personal web site or a myspace link or someting because I see no picture. any picture linked from personal web sites or my space are blocked my my companies firewall. I am sure I am not the only member that deals with this. I can see any uploaded picture but not some linked Img linked pictures.

Just would be nice to see it :(

That is a fresh face cut today an almost polished finish from a circular saw. The smaller piece was a slice off an uneven side so I could take off a slice the other face, so imagine the 2 pieces at 90 degrees and the radius of 1/4 of a log between the 2 was what i was given to take what I wanted then return :cry: Couldn't of had a deeper cut if I tried Mike.

Would a scrap I have work for bandsaw guides or would tufnol be better? The nasty plastic one in my 3 wheel jobbie keep wearing at the front throwing out deep cuts and I keep needing to file them true say once a month.

Picture quality is not good enough for a guess, but if it is imbuya it will have a spicy smell that can't be mistaken for anything else.

Mad Rose.

Sand some of it and see if it smells like roses - if not it is probably mad rose which BTW is a fantastic wood in all respects.

Was gonna stay in it's rough form until I need it, it close sawn to size can't imagine it would move it's been kept in a heated workshop attatched to the house for 30 years air drying

Eventually found out that it's either Pau Ferro or Santos Rosewood more likely the latter
