Hi everyone. I have been having issues lately with the .01 black fiber swelling under a thin french polish finish and telegraphing much more than anything around it. Obviously it is not a structural issue but it sure doesn't look that good. I have noticed that I have not had the same problem under Polyester. I would prefer to make my own .01 veneers and it would be even better if I could get a deep rosewood color instead of that jet black. I can sand resawn wood to .01 but I don't have any experience with the dyeing process. I figure getting the dye through something that thin may not take an extreme setup but I am not even sure what medium setup would require. If anyone has done this or has any info I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks! |

I'm reading this with interest, as I was getting ready to make some tiles and purflings using the fiber. I don't want to create a problem. It sure would be nice to be able to get .01 dyed veneer, or .01 natural veneer in good woods. Maybe I just have not looked in the right places. |

I tried dying some maple veneer strips in a pressure cooker a few years ago. I cooked it for about 30 minutes, but the dye did not fully penetrate the veneer. Now, I let the pros supply my dyed veneer. |

Barry, you forgot to tell us which pros have the .01 veneer, dyed or not. |

Waddy, the .3mm(I think) LMI veneers are .01 and work fine. I have not had as much of a problem with them swelling as I do with the fiber and the colors are good. |

Thanks, Burton. That's what I'll do. I didn't realize they offered the thinner version. They get a premium price, but I guess you get what you pay for. |

I'm pretty sure Shane at High Mountain has all kinds of dyed veneers. So far as penetration goes I think you'd want to use vacuum first to pull out as much air as possible, followed by some real pressure to drive the dye in. It's not the kind of thing one would want to do on a hobby budget. |
