Oh, and pardon my use of "holy" cause that too had no DEEP meaning.

I have a couple of questions.
What blade is best for re-sawing and where is the best place to buy blades?
Also, speaking a of saw blade, what saw/blade do you use to cut fret slots?

I have a good friend that bought me a Grizzly 14" band saw w/ a 6" extension and re-saw fence because the Lord told him to. I was blown away. PTL I have a couple of questions. What blade is best for re-sawing and where is the best place to buy blades? Also, speaking a of saw blade, what saw/blade do you use to cut fret slots? Thanks Mark Ewing

Wow! Lenox Trimaster. 3/8" is about all you can tension even vaguely enough with that sort of frame. I can get mine to 17,000 psi with my Delta 14", which is way short of the 30,000 psi recommended, but I've sawn everything OK at that tension.

What Todd said, except I find the most useful blade to leave in the saw for general purposes is a 1/4" 6tpi, either skip or hook, depending on the brand; hook if Timberwolf, skip if Lenox or Starrett. IME, hook cuts better initially and on softer woods, skip seems to do at least as well on very hard woods and lasts a bit longer. Band saw blades are a supply item that wears out (dulls) and needs regular replacing. I've noticed that a lot of people leave them on the machine long after they should have been tossed.

You have nooooo idea how many responses I was pondering (from the sarcastic mockery to downright offensive and insulting (the "get me kicked off the forum" kind of comments). I would have gotten a good laugh out of it anyway. I might have actually posted if Brock had not come in. Congrats on the new saw!. You mentioned blade choice for fret slots, but I've never known anyone to use a band saw for this, and don't think it would work well at all. That's typically a job for the table saw. For general use keep 1/4" 6tpi, and 1/2" 4tpi skip tooth. I just use flexback blades, usually from Simonds or Morse. For a general use saw that may be used to cut a variety of materials at any given point, I think flexback is a good way to go. There are better blades that hold sharp longer, but general use saws are easy to abuse (at least it seems this way in my shop ), so I don't like to use the more expensive blades that I'd have to swap out if I needed to cut acrylics or something. Cheap and disposable is the way to go for me.

Sorry. I did not mean to stir up something. I now know better. I am mostly interested in saw blade info at this point. I guess I kind of blended my questions between band saw blades and table saw blades or hand saws for slotting the finger board.

Mark, you stirred nothing up. My unpardonable attempt at humor went right over the heads of some. However, I still think it is dang funny. Glad you got an awesome gift. I definitely want a 14" bandsaw some day. A table saw too. And a casewell buffer should round it all out. Mike

Mark, I was gifted a bandsaw too, a Laguna 18". No greater feeling than to be surprised by the generosity and love of others. Congratulations on the saw, you'll use the fire out of it, hopefully. I have a Delta 14 for general purpose, and use the aforementioned Olson general purpose 1/4 inch blades, cheap and last a long time. Not too familiar with the Grizzly, it won't take you long to find it's capabilities. Blades and saws are a real learning experience. It's always good to ask questions. Hey, since you are a new bandsaw owner, I recommend you go to http://www.highlandwoodworking.com and check out their great setups on Bandsaw info in their library. http://www.highlandwoodworking.com/inde ... ustom&ID=3 There are nine excellent articles on setting up and operating bandsaws and you can print them off the pdf format. Enjoy your new saw and your friend. Real friends are harder to come by than bandsaws!

Thanks Mark Ewing Amazing account, thanks, that's my sorta currency! Can't add any more to what the good guys have said on here, but will re-inforce the importance of putting a new blade on straight away and not using the preinstalled one; also that a decent bandsaw setup will save you plenty of timber. If you can't afford the expensive blades, don't go cheap and aim for midrange brands. The blade quality is ohhh so important.....

No, I'm not posting for reasons you may think...just to say that I have the same exact setup Mike, and you'll love it! Folks made fun of my all-Grizzly shop back in the furniture building days...but I ran the bejesus out of them and they never broke on me...all the while my peers were always fixing their Delta stuff...when I downsized to fit into my new attic shop the big 'ol Grizz's had to go, but I kept the bandsaw (but getting up the stairs bought my chiropractor new patio chairs!!). Enjoy, and keep that friend forever!
