One of the luthiers whose work I particularly like is the late Manouk Papazian. He was an Armenian born in 1911 and was active as a guitar maker from the middle 50's through the early 80's. He died in 1998.
A precocious talent as a youth, he was designing rugs at age 13.
Take a look at two of his rosettes, This use of the column/arch motif predates that of Jose Romanillos by ten years :

Also the incorporation of his name into the design seems to be unique:

Enlightening, I always thought the column-arch idea was a Romanillos original.
