I am thinking of, for my next project, a J40 with a Florentine cut away. Aside from the mold, I imagine this being a two part side. Thoughts, pics, ideas?

There was a thread (maybe a tut?) on the old forum about a fantastic way to do floentine cutaways. It might take some searching to find it or perhaps someone has a link. It is well worth the effort to find that thread!

Todd, maybe I'm seeing this wrong, but your neck block looks symmetrical, and too narrow. A neck block should extend beyond the side of the fretboard in order to avoid side-of-the-fretboard cracks (and give more general rigidity to this area). With a cutaway, there no choice on the treble side-- it has to be just inside the edge of the board (if the side of the guitar is to be flush with the side of the neck). You can reinforce the top underneath the edge of the board beyond the cutaway if the board is glued to the top. But there's no need for the block to be of equal size on both sides of the centerline. The bass side can be out to the usual width.

Mike buddy Rod True did an excellent tutorial of how he does seamless Florentine cut-aways and you can find it here: http://luthiersforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10102&t=12750&hilit=+Florentine

on this subject....what would be the minimum length of a side so that the cutaway could come from the same piece of wood and for all effective purposes be grain matched at the joint?

Thanks for all the great replies! That guitar in the pic is a very nicely done job! What kind of wood is that Todd?

thanks for the reply Todd...from measurements I've taken on my guitars with florentines I came up with a minimum of 36" and was wondering if that was too short for effective use of the materials without any issues...glad to see I was on the right track with my theories

Todd,

The one thing that still mystifies me is the amount of kerfing above the side after gluing. Does your pic show the result after sanding? Or, do you glue flush with the side?
