Post subject:  My next offering in the OLF Library of plans
Well for you guys that have always wanted to build a classical but use the standard Steel string assembly process with a body mold and bolt-on neck will be happy to know I am working on and nearly through with my next edition to the OLF Library of plans Here is a sneak peek and it is drum roll please........

This will be more likely of interest to hobby builders than the typical hardcore Classical builders But none the less it is a way to build a classical with a bolt on in the same process we steel stringers are accustomed to

Holy Smokes! TwiLight Zone!

I was just at Bob Garrish's shop (Saint Lutherie) yesterday talking about using/wanting a bolt on neck for a classical. Very nice MP looking forward to getting my little mitts on a set of those!

I think Joshia deJonge also uses this type of construction for her instruments. http://www.joshiadejonge.com

Personally I find nothing wrong with it. I also originally designed a neck block that had hide-able pockets for the bolts and appeared to be a Spanish Heel construction when finish but decided that I might be accused of trying to fool some one into thinking it was Spanish Heel construction and decided I did not even want that to come up.

I think it's a great idea. My first build was a 1937 Hauser clone. Since it was just for me, I adapted the neck
attachment to a bolt-on. Sounds fine, I see no drawbacks.

I am so glad I'm a hobby builder and not a hard core classical builder!

I am planning a Padauk/Cedar nomex double top, double back, laminated sides, sound ports, and hopefully a bolt on CNC classical neck!!

And for the coup de grace...I am using it to play Chet Atkins style finger style!

I wonder if I should post this on the classic guitar forum??? beehive

Michael bro I just want to thank you once again for all that you do for us. To date most of the guitars that I have built have been based on your very fine plans.

I am sorry to say that my Classical Bolt-On Neck plan was never picked up by Stewart MacDonald. They only carry my guitar plans. There is not a OLF Classical guitar plan available. When the OLF Library of plans went away in 2008 so did this plan set. The CAD file was on a laptop that was lost during one of my overseas business trips. I have searched my back up and I can not find that file anywhere. Lance and Brock may still have a copy of the PDF I sent them but I do not know that for sure.

Looking forward to getting my mits on a set of those plans! I've built an SJ from your plans and found them to be an excellent resource. I have a set of Uncle Bob's Dalbergia Granadillo earmarked for that project. Thank you Michael!

It is no longer. it was done away with back in late 2008

I am setting here scratching my head.....5 people have asked about aquiring copies of the plans. 3 directly on this post and 2 by PM. I sent out PMs to all 5 within just a few mins of thier post or PM and that was quite a while ago. All 5 PM are still unread. Not that that is a problem but I am woundering if the PM service is down or somthing idunno

I just finished my first classical guitar, a Hauser derivative, built using the dish method with a bolt-on neck. I see no technical reason why classical guitars can't be built this way by professional builders. The traditional solera method is just that - traditional. The world continually moves on from old traditions as new techniques/tools/materials/ideas are developed. The owner of my first classical has tried it side-by-side with several solera-built traditional classical guitars and apparently there's quite a difference between them: mine is easier to play and sounds a lot better. I ,for one, plan to keep building them this way.

Steven Walters builds first class classical guitars with bolt on necks. Also very playable. However, there are differences, and a solera built classical can be built to play as easily as any other guitar. It's all in the geometry of the system, and the fine tuning of the fretboard. Also, in the classical world, tradition is a big item. It is changing some, with the lattice and double top guitars, but they represent only a very small percentage of the active, guitar playing, buyers.
