Does anyone know the proper steps to sanding and repainting a solid body guitar? The Ibanex X that I am working on just has way to many dents and the stain doesn't work for me too much. Do i have to sand all the way through the laquere gloss layer down to the wood or can i just sand out the dents and scraches and then repaint it from there? I have a spray gun that i am going to use and have everything ready set up for the painting process, i just really need help to know how to prepare it to that phase. I really appreciate any help that i can get. Thanks

If you are going to repaint it, I would go all the way to the wood. It is the only way you are going to be assured to get through all of the dents and no witness lines fromt he old finish. You can see the thread on removing nitro and bridge for a little more help in removing the old finish.

A chemical stripper would work, but sanding it off is going to be your best finish (more labor intensive though)
