At this point, I'd have to say that butternut is marginal for SS necks, and OK for nylon. Most of the butternut necks I've used on SS guitars have been fine, but a copule have been a bit more flexible than I'd like: you need, at leaste, a good truss rod, and may need to tweak it more. The stuff is very much like cedro, so think of it that way.

I made one butternut neck in the late-1990's. It was a 12-fret 000 with a 1 3/4 nut, and the neck was pretty full. I used a one-way aluminum channel truss rod, and it has held up fine.
The back and sides were also butternut, which made the lightest weight guitar I have built since the early-1980's. Great sound.

I agree. My current domestic favorite as a mahogany substitute is sassafras.
