I'm in the process of building a similar machine. I found a great deal on a gear motor on Ebay ($125). It's a SEW Eurodrive 1/2 HP, 46 RPM, 230/460. Unfortunately it came pre-wired for 3 phase. Re-wiring to 230 should relatively simple but I do have a couple questions for someone more experienced with wiring etc.

1. The wiring diagram looks easy to switch the merged connections but in order to do so the connector for T4, T5 & T6 is absent. I plan to use a small piece of 10 gauge wire (probably overkill) and strip off the areas needed to make those 3 terminals connect. That seems simple enough, I just want to make sure that I'm not missing something.

2. Secondly, will this speed control work on it's own or will I need to add a capacitor?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/DC-51-DC-90V-AC ... 3641.l6368

Descriptions:
Green LED indicator, 6 terminals, on/ off switch for controlling, the knob switch for adjust the speed.
Used for Machine Tools, Textile Machinery, Conveying Machine, Printing Mechanism,Food Machinery, Vending Machine, Packing Machinery, Gumming Machine, etc.

Specifications:
Product Name: Motor Speed Controller
Model: DC-51
Material: Plastic, Electrical Material
Power Supply: AC 220V, 50HZ
Output Voltage: DC90V
Size: 8.8 x 6 x 10cm/ 3.5" x 2.4" x 3.9" (L*W*H)
Color: Gray
Net Weight: 154g

I'll post a couple pics from tapatalk since it's easier there.

You've got a 3 phase AC motor.

That controller you linked to is for a DC motor.

If you want to use that motor, this is what you want.

The nice thing about that controller is that it takes single phase 115V input & puts out 230V 3-phase.

Here's a link to a video of one of those controllers on my drill press.

Thanks for the info. I didn't even realize that there was 3-phase 230. I assumed that it was like my bandsaw and either ran single phase 220 or 3-phase 440. I learn something new every day.
