laughing6-hehe laughing6-hehe

Michael I struggle with the cosmetics. I especially hate it when my foundation clashes with my eye shadow....

BAAAAHHHHAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA laughing6-hehe laughing6-hehe

I couldn't help it.

But seriously. I spent nearly the entire day today comparing this kind of binding to this kind of binding to bla bla bla....but I have a secret weapon. A woman in the house with a sense of design!

Chris

Very nice first effort! The blood wood binding is a very striking contrast against the back and sides. It was the first thing that caught my eye. I love it.

Todd asked what's next. Well, originally I was going to make a Cocobolo Parlor and in discussion with several others that have much more experience...I decided to make another OM....just to see if I could repeat the results I got with this guitar.

Sooooooooooooooo......I started this last night. Mahogany OM with a bookmatched Brazilian Cherry (Jatoba) wedge on the back. Maple strips in between.

Fantastic first guitar, Chris. I particularly like the back wood and like the look of your finish. The rosette is a bit wide for my taste, but I like your approach. Looks like the fit and finish is well above the normal first guitar.

I like your plan for the 3-piece back. If you want to really challenge yourself, see if you can miter all of the purfling joints on this one...I have confidence that you can pull it off. If you need help, just ask.

Good luck and enjoy the ride!

JJ it's funny you mention the rosette. When first designed and installed I loved it. When I put finish over it....I didn't love it as much. The EIR in it was a burl and frankly the figure got lost for some reason. I don't think I cleaned it as good as it should have been. For all of the revealing qualities of shellac....not much got revealed in this instance but again I don't think it was the shellac. Not sure exactly as to the content of the next rosette but I do think it will be narrower.

Thanks a bunch.
Chris

So, what are your thoughts as to accessorizing with Jatoba? Are you doing bindings, headstock etc. with Jatoba as well? I happen to favor 3-piece backs also and was wondering what your design thought process might be.

JJ it's not uncommon for me to fly by the seat of my pants on some of the design details. However, so far I am settled on maple binding. Mostly because of the maple strips in the back. The rosette is going to be Jatoba but not sure as to design. I also know the bridge, fingerboard, and headstock overlay on this one will either be Cocobolo or Macassar Ebony....those choices are very divergent I know but it's what I have.

I am limited in my supplies when it comes to lam's and purf's. One day though. One of the ideas I have is a Jatoba purf on the inside of the binding (for the top).

.......deep in thought. 8-)
