I've started a couple of size 5 Sapele and Sitka Terz guitars. Other than that, trying to get my shop straightened back up to a usable degree of disarray.

Hi folks,

It’s been a while. My wife and I have been living in Germany half time which has been amazing! Can’t wait to get back over there! Great beer and great bread, not necessarily in that order!

Lufferin is way more fun when there are no clients involved! I’m building myself a couple new instruments. One is a 26” scale crossover, the other is a guitar-body octave mandolin. The mando body is based on a Gibson L-5. I’ve built both of these models in the past - people kept buying them, leaving me without one of each for myself.

Hope all are well!

Tschüß! M

My wife and I retired from working at a national park. We loved the trails. So we spend time turning our piece of the planet into a pleasant place to walk in nature. That area follows a creek bed and is soft and muddy most of the year. We needed two tracks so we could mow the trails in the wet areas or nature would take it back pretty quickly. When done we will have about 1.5 miles of trails. We just love it, most think we're crazy. I just turned 75 so it keeps me in shape too.

We get in excess of 300" of snow so even with trails snowshoes are a necessity in winter.

Preparing for a WRC/Wenge Grand Concert build, reorganizing some wood storage (too embarrassed to show pics) in my humidity controlled workshop where I'm also currently re-humidifying 3 batches of assorted backs and tops after baking them in my drying oven.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

That doesn’t sound crazy to me at all - it sounds amazing!

Best, M

This came in the shop the other day. It's an inexpensive guitar but the owner likes to pull it out on stage for a couple of songs. He says it's a crowd pleaser. Came in making no sound from anything. Had to take the necks off to get the pick guard off. Looks like bugs have been in it, one of the dirtier ones I've seen- yuk. I'll clean it up, find out what's broke and fix it. Then I get to restring it  Fortunately I don't have to do anything else to it.

Interesting how whoever made it put the big knot in the neck pocket so they didn't waste the wood.Image
