I will soon be installing the truss rod in the neck of my guitar. I bought the neck from Hannalei Moon and it came with an Allied Luthrie truss rod.

Any suggestions on how to install this rod? I definitely DON'T want a rattle. It cam with a mahogany filler strip that covers the top of the rod. The instructions say to use epoxy on the filler strip but states not to use glue around the truss rod nor does it comment about using silicon around the truss rod. It also says to use a little clamp pressure on the filler strip which is in cantact with the truss rod while the epoxy dries around the filler strip.

Since I don't want a rattle, I wanted to check in here and see if you are installing these rods with no glue or silicone around the truss rod. Any other suggestions you may have?

Thanks!

I use three dobs of silicone, one each end and one in the middle under the rod, probably not necessary, but does no harm. and epoxy or fish glue the filler strip in with three clamps, the one in the centre will compress the rod down. Allied have an instruction sheet on their website here: http://www.alliedlutherie.com/truss_rods.htm.

I use allied rod's and I just glue the spline over the top with some epoxy, or thick superglue. As soon as you put any pressure on the rod it will not rattle. If it's rattleing it's probably because it is in the dead neutral position and "loose". turning the rod a 1/2 turn (just to the point where it is about to adjust the neck, but does not) will remove any rattle. In normal use with a tiny bit of relief there is no rattle.

Thanks Colin and John!

So you recommend I try to bow the rod down slightly in the middle as Colin alluded to?

I make my splins over thickness, and when clamping them in place, yes, the rod dips in the center, which is fine.

In addition to what was said above, I always add a little light lubricant to each end on the threads. I realy like my wax based bike chain lubricant for this. It penatrates well into the threads, won't migrate, and ensures that adhesive will not effect the threads.
