Hello All,

I am in the process of planning out a Weissenborn and have a few questions... Currently I am laying out the bracing and am trying to get the bridge wings to overlap the x-braces to avoid any top deformation.

I can't seem to find these dimensions:
Soundhole diameter and location of center-point up from bridge?
X-Brace angle?
Rough bridge dimensions?
Bridge patch thickness?

I have a ton more questions and thought I would start here. If there are any tricks or watchouts for a first time Weissenborn builder please post them here.

Thanks in advance for you time and help.

Best,
_Mike

Todd,

Thank you so much for the reply! You are always an invaluable resource!

On your Weissenborn-style guitars does your bridge wings reach your xbrace? If not, have you had any issues with top deformation? And do you recommend extending the bridge patch up to the intersection of the xbrace? Or will that kill the sound?

I'm not sure if I'm over thinking at this point and should just get on with the first one and if it tears itself apart...do it different the next time. Sorry for all the questions...

Thanks again!
_Mike

Mike,

This thread has some stuff that should help you. Tony Francis imparts some interesting observations on the bracing of the originals here.

I think you've seen the thread of mine on the Luthier Community Forum documenting the build of the acoustic lap slide I made for Colin Symonds. I can't comment on Weissenborn sound as I've never seen or played an original but I'm more than happy with the sound I get from my version and bracing. Colin is picking his Red Kite up a week on Saturday so he can give his view too. These are some of the most "fun" instruments I know to play so you are going to have a good time.

Yes thanks Dave!

That thread is chock full on info. I hope we can continue the conversation here.

I'll have more questions to come. Thanks for the help so far!

_Mike
