I loosened a fret board extension on a Martin to do a Neck Re-set.It seems that right at the fifteenth fret it doesn`t want to let loose.I found the joint perfectly, and I`m wondering if I go ahead and steam the joint will this loosen the rest of the extension to pull it and the neck at the same time.

I just realized I`m probably hitting the the dovtail just below the board.Am I correct in assuming that this will pull up together?

That's why you usually drill the steam hole thru the 15th fret slot. Once you do several of these, you will wait to seperate the extension till you've injected some steam, it helps it along. Not that you did anything wrong the way you are going. Sometimes the extension pops easily, sometimes it doesn't.

James -

I normally only lift the board to around the 16th fret and then let the steam needle do the rest so, yes, that will work fine. And, like David, I've usually got the needle holes drilled (I use two) and the water cooking while I'm doing the FB heating.

There is usually a somewhat broader and uninterrupted glue surface up there so it can be a bit more difficult in that area.

Forgive me for asking since you've probably done these before but you did remember to remove the truss rod nut (if it's an adjustable rod) before you got to this point didn't you? I only asked because I had to rescue one a while back after the poor guy had already poured a half gallon of steam into the joint and it was acting the same way.

James -

There is a truss rod but it's a hollow, square gizmo that is not adjustable. It terminates at the dovetail and remains hidden until the neck is off. Sorry for the silly question and good luck with it.

David - I'm in Huntsville.

Thanks for that info Jay.As you can tell I`m a bit new to this.I guess since there`s no adjustment nut ,I`m good to steam the neck off.

I take it , this is your first Martin reset? Don't be surprised to see shims in the neck block. I use a piece of tempered steel shim for the extension to work under as the heat breaks the glue. You may also see this with hide glue.
