Did they all go under the Veritas name ? And, what did you do with your stone to tweak the saw?
I've only used a file on a saw, once, and pretty much destroyed it.

Todd, great review. While agree that the dovetail saw works great (and great price too), I do have to disagree on one point: That thing is UGLY! Maybe I just need to get used to it.

After reading the review (though I tend to shop for carbide inserts rather than planes these days) I had to go see what you were talking about with the 'futuristic' plane. The new block plane looks like it was designed either to win a race (aerodynamic lines) or to match my Gillette Mach 3 rather than to occupy my workshop

A dovetail saw is one of the few hand tools that I pick up at least once a week, so I'll definitely be checking that one out.

I saw the new block plane in the store cabinet a few weeks ago I couldn't handle it to try out, so have no opinion about it's function, but I do think it looks like something that I'd like to have. There are two versions, basic black and polished nickle (I believe).

I have bought that plane based on your recommendation, and with the grain of salt of me being a beginner, I must say it is quite good. I also use a higher angle blade for smoothing and works nicely. I also find it very easy and fast to set up.
The only drawback is that it is sometimes too big for smoothing so i was thinking about getting their lowangle smoother too.

My one Lee Valley plane is their "apron" plane--an updated version of the 103 size. I like it and find it comfortable, although the blade does need to be loosened to be adjusted as Todd mentions.

I have yet to own a LN. I'm sure they are a superior product, but my taste in block planes runs to old Stanley knuckle joints.

I don't know how many of you ever saw Ernie Fosselius's short movie Hardware Wars, but I can't look at those new planes and not think of it. Too bad they weren't around at the time.
