Where are you getting your Ebony from? I'm looking to dress it out myself for fret boards, bridge blanks, head plates and binding and what ever else.

I'm surprised you can't get it locally. I get mine , 1"x4" sticks (either macassar or gabon) from one of several exotic wood dealers in the area. (I know "A & M" in Cambridge sells a lots in the states.)

ZootMan-he has rough blank ebony for such sized items. Gaboon(Gabon) is getting harder to find in dense black, so some places it is rapidly rising in price. Unquestioned quality from Bob, though.mt

Zootman? I've found that Madagascar is the stuff that is very hard to get now. Probably getting out of reach for guitars.

Vikwood has Madegascar Ebony fingerboards in all sizes, and in two grades.

Madagascar Ebony is almost commercially extinct; it's definitely on the way. Last I heard, the government of Madagascar had locked down exports.

For the hassles involved in drying ebony (it loves to split), I get mine from Shane Neifer (High Mountain Tonewoods) or Todd Taggert (Allied Lutherie). The fretboard blanks are thick enough to saw up into bridge blanks. They both import directly from Africa, so you're not going to do much better than that. The quantity you buy is going to be a larger determinant of cost than the condition you buy it in.

[gloat]I scored a whole big box of ebony f/b mishapen/split blanks at the recent LMI annual clear out sale (real cheap!) - they work great re-cut for bridges and game pieces for Christmas pressies![/gloat] 8-)

I have been happy with the consistantly high quality black ebony I get from LMI.
